Busway Frequently Asked Questions
1. What can busway be compared to?
Busway is a power transmission and distribution product. Think of busway like a significantly more robust extension cord sometimes with a power stip. Feeder busway is like the extension cord, transmitting power from point A to point B. A Power strip is like plug-in busway, where special devices, bus plugs, may be plugged into the busway to tap off power at specific locations. Busway would and could be used anywhere cable and sometimes conduit are found.
2. What are the advantages of busway?
Busway is a totally modular, scalable, and flexible product compared to more traditional distribution and transmission methods. Bus runs may easily be expanded as application footprint and layout change, and individual tap off locations may easily be moved to accommodate end user needs. Relative to cable and conduit, that busway can save 20-30% on total installed costs. Additionally, compared to cable and conduit, busway consumes about 75% less space than an equivalent cabled solution.
3. What are Siemens different busway offerings?
Siemens most popular busway product line is Sentron. Sentron busway runs from 225-5000A, offers both Aluminum and Copper conductors, and fits the requirements for a variety of different applications. From power distribution in a high rise commercial building to a manufacturing plant to a datacenter, Sentron is the preferred solution. Other Siemens busway products include XJ-L HD, XL-U, and BD serving niche markets. XJ-L HD is primarily a commercial and light industrial product. XL-U is an extremely robust product serving applications with particularly harsh environmental conditions or extreme voltage fluctuations (i.e. manufacturing facilities with welding). BD serves a massive install base primarily in the automotive industry.
4. What is the difference between feeder and plug-in busway?
Feeder busway is used to get power from point A to point B, analogous to the extension cord. Plug-in busway is used to distribute power in a facility, analogous to the power strip you have under your desk and has up to 10 tap off locations per 10’ section of busway.
5. What is a bus plug and what types of bus plugs does Siemens provide?
A bus plug is a device that plugs into a section of busway (note bus plugs can only be installed on plug-in busway). A bus plug is used to tap off power from a run of busway in a safe and reliable manner. Generally there are three different types of bus plugs (not for all product lines), a circuit breaker bus plug, a fusible bus plug (or fusible switch), and a surge protection device bus plug. Bus plugs will either be cabled to whatever downstream device they are feeding by the end user or installer or can be shipped directly from the Siemens factory with cable and connector already installed.
6. What is the difference between the sandwich and spaced in air styles of busway?
Siemens busway can be categorized as one of two styles: sandwich or spaced in air. The sandwich busway has an epoxy coating as its primary insulation. Spaced in air busway utilizes air spacing between the bus bars with a secondary epoxy insulation, depending on the product. Sentron is a sandwich style busway while XJ-L HD, XL-U and BD are spaced in air style busways.
